Protecting Ourselves from Blue Light
In order to avoid the harmful affects of blue light it may seem like you need to return to your ancestral ways of hunting and gathering or farming. Sounds good but of course you need to live in the modern world. So while we cannot avoid blue light fully there are steps we can take to reduce exposure and steps to counterbalance what we are exposed to. Ultimately these small steps will help you feel better, make you more productive and help you to be a more creative, happier and healthier person.

1) Make your sleep a priority! Without proper sleep you cannot expect to perform well at work or life. The best thing you can do is avoid all blue light 2-3 hours before bed.  This means dim the lights in your house and avoid screen time. Taking magnesium, the anti stress mineral, before bed in another way to reduce stress and promote restful sleep.

2) Protect your eyes against digital eyestrain by taking regular breaks from screens and using the “20-20-20” rule: Every 20 minutes, shift your eyes to look at an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Also switch to ambient lighting at home and in your workspace.

3) Remind yourself to blink more often when using your computer. Keep your eyes moist.

4) If you suffer headaches, in addition to the above suggestions try doing eye exercises. With your eyes – look up, look down, look right, look left. After a few cycles of that use your eyes to make circles clockwise and then make circles counterclockwise.

5) Make a healthy diet and lifestyle a priority and find ways to move more throughout your day. If you have a sedentary job take the stairs and be sure to take regular breaks. Be sure to stand up and walk around every hour for 5 minutes. Make sure you book yourself regular exercise times during the week and include some sort of stress management like yoga or meditation.

6) Invest in a pair of glasses that filter blue light. Use these when working for extended periods and absolutely use them if you must work or use devices at night. Filtering the blue light will help you sleep better, reduce headaches, migraines and eye strain and protect you against the interrupted leptin levels that interfere with your hunger and activity levels.
